It is a choice in how you use those ports. It is not required to be used as an Internet gateway. The default configuration helps you out too by assigning a WAN and LAN interface so you have your default gateway that you're familiar with for consumer oriented products. The design is wise. The only thing I find misleading is the physical port numbers are in reverse order to the logical interfaces in pfSense. No biggie, but it is a bit confusing why but once you get it setup it is done and forgotten.

@scottlindner Wrong subject? :) Agreed but they document it. It’s a bit worse changing models or reinstall/restore because I always have to look up which to use.

Pre-2.7.2/23.09: Only install packages for your version, or risk breaking it. Select your branch in System/Update/Update Settings.
When upgrading, allow 10-15 minutes to restart, or more depending on packages and device speed.
